Tracking wild manatees

To study manatee movement patterns and habitat utilisation, individuals are tagged and tracked. GPS receivers and Argos satellite transmitters, encased in floating tethered housings, provided accurate locations and enabled us to remotely monitor the detailed movements of tagged individuals. VHF transmitters within the tags enabled scientists to locate and observe tagged manatees, and to replace tags that malfunctioned or had dead batteries.
